AL-MUWATTA: SYNOPSIS

Classroom based course.

The Muwaṭṭaʾ (Arabic: الموطأ‎‎) of Imam Malik is the earliest written collection of hadith comprising the subjects of Islamic law, compiled and edited by the Imam, Malik ibn Anas. Malik's best-known work, Al-Muwatta was the first legal work to incorporate and join hadith and fiqh together.

Al-Muwatta consists of approximately 1,720 hadith divided amongst the following hadith terminology as follows:

  • 600 marfu` hadith
  • 613 mawquf hadith
  • 285 maqtu' hadith
  • 222 mursal hadith

 

This course is aimed for those seeking to studying the hadith text using the commentary by al-Zurqani. Students will study the methodology used by Imam Malik in narrating and compiling hadith, as well as the many different transmissions of the text and their relative strengths and weaknesses.
